R Kelly who has been sentenced to 30 years in jail; had an illegal relationship with the R&B singer of the late ’90s, Aaliyah who was nicknamed Baby girl while she was alive. Their relationship which also included a secret marriage was illegal because Aaliyah born Aaliyah Dana Haughton was only 15 years of age at the time of their marriage. R Kelly was 27 at the time.

They had the secret marriage to enable R Kelly’s consent as an adult for Aaliyah’s abortion.

The duo met through Aaliyah’s Uncle Barry Hankerson who was initially her manager before R Kelly filled in as her mentor. R Kelly served as the lead singer and producer of her debut album “Age Ain’t Nothing but a Number” released in May 1994. The working relationship got romantic which later resulted in her pregnancy but of course, the two denied getting married and described the marriage certificate which was found as a forgery.

According to the marriage certificate released by Vibe magazine, they were married on August 31 1994 in Sheraton Gateway Suites in Rosemont, Illinois. The marriage was annulled by her parents in February 1995. This makes it six months they’ve been married illegally.
