Kanye West dedicates Sunday Service to late designer Virgil Abloh

Kanye West’s latest Sunday Service event was dedicated to his close buddy Virgil Abloh.

The rapper held his recurrent live-streamed concert only hours after it was reported that the designer of Louis Vuitton and Off-White died on Sunday at the age of 41, after a quiet two-year battle with cancer. West dedicated the event to his close friend on the website of the Sunday Service live-stream.

The note, which remained on the site after the service, stated, “In loving remembrance of Virgil Abloh, the creative director of Donda.”

Abloh met West approximately 20 years ago and joined his creative team, according to The New York Times. In 2010, Abloh became the creative director of Donda, West’s creative incubator, after they both interned at Fendi.

Marc Jacobs, Donatella Versace, Pharrell Williams, Hailey Bieber, Drake, Kris Jenner, and Lenny Kravitz have all paid tribute to the designer on social media since his death.

Gigi Hadid shared a lengthy Instagram post praising her “close buddy” along with a series of photos of the two of them together.

“He was one of a kind.” “His warmth and dynamic generosity left a lasting mark on everyone he came into contact with— he made everyone feel seen and valued,” she said. “I, and all the people and industries who have been fortunate enough to work with and know the actual supernova behind this man, will be sadly lost, treasured, and appreciated.”

“I imagine him now as our Mickey Mouse… always with us, always adored, always magical, always leading us with that particular Virgil FUN; I’m sure that’s how he wanted to be remembered, but it’ll never be the same without him there. Every day, V, you will continue to inspire me. Every moment makes me feel blessed and honored. My friend, take it easy. You are incredibly adored. You were the one who made the difference.”

Bella Hadid followed suit, posting a similar slideshow of photos with the caption: “You saw me and backed me up on every level. As you did to a large number of us. A light that is ethereal. You have always encouraged me to keep pushing forward, to work hard, and to be compassionate. Whatever happens, I’m devastated. You will be greatly missed and remembered.”

Abloh was described as “a true inspiration in so many ways” by fellow designer Victoria Beckham, while Justin Timberlake stated that he “gave the world so much, in so short time.”
