Kendrick Lamar grew up in Compton, California. His father, Kenny, was a gang member who died of AIDS when Kendrick was only nine years old. Not much is known about his mother, but it’s safe to say that she cared for him after his father passed away. Most of Lamar’s personal life is surrounded by mystery because he rarely talks about it in interviews. He doesn’t like talking about anything negative—and perhaps most importantly for this topic, he doesn’t like talking too much about himself. She would read African-American history books with him at night and encouraged him to become involved in school plays because she knew how important it was for him to practice drama. He told XXL magazine that when I was 12 years old my mama put me into talent shows…She always held me down.

Kendrick’s mother was one of his greatest motivators. In a 2017 interview with Apple Music’s Zane Lowe, Kendrick said that she is the epitome of a strong African-American woman. Kendrick still looks up to her even after her passing, which he tragically had to face at age 58.

In 2015 he said in an interview with Rolling Stone that she inspired all of his album To Pimp A Butterfly, including its hit song i. I think if I would have met my mother today I would have fallen in love instantly…she was everything I wanted in a woman.

In Kendrick’s song ‘i’, he references his mother by saying, Momma was a fighter; she deserves respect. When talking about her in an interview, he reveals that she taught him how to give back. According to Kendrick, her work ethic is similar to that of Nelson Mandela.

Kendrick also mentioned in an interview that he used to keep quotes from his mother on his desk in high school. One was an excerpt from The Prophet by Kahlil Gibran that reads, Your children are not your children. They are life’s investment in your future.

This isn’t a total surprise, as Kendrick credits her for being one of many strong female influences who helped shape him into the man he is today. I just want my children to respect women, period, he said during a 2015 interview with GQ Magazine. Because I had sisters growing up and my mom… You see how they take care of us, right?

When I see her, it’s like, ‘Damn. You still got it, Mom.’ That feeling alone is crazy for me because there are very few people that can say they have that type of bond with someone. In 2013 he told Billboard magazine, We talk every day on FaceTime—at least four times a week we make sure we get on the phone together. She’s somebody who showed me how to do it at a young age.

I had some problems with family members. I just wanted to get away from them. I ended up moving in with my mother, he told Billboard magazine in 2012, when good kid, m.A.A.d city first came out.

My dad was like a teacher. He kept me in line; I wanted for nothing. Kendrick also mentioned that he looks up to both of his parents because they put all of their effort into me, so I have to give it back. His mother made a huge impact on him growing up as well, even though she passed away in December 2003 at age 56 from colon cancer. He credits her for playing a part in who he is today.
