Nas Describes His Struggle With COVID-19: ‘It Was A Tough Time’

Nas discloses that he caught COVID-19 late last year and describes his struggles with the virus in a new cover story for Ebony magazine. He admits, “I caught COVID in late October.” “This is the first time I’ve brought it up. It was a trying period. It was exhausting both psychologically and physically. Chemical warfare, irrational politics, bigotry, food shortages, police misconduct, and Black-on-Black murder are all part of today’s reality. The human spirit is being put to the ultimate test. I believe God has a plan for everything. But we’re in a critical period right now.”

In other sections of the profile, he discusses the current rappers that inspire him, as well as freely offering advise on how they can achieve the same degree of success as he has. He praises Lady London, a young rapper whose freestyles on social media have gone viral on multiple occasions, making her part of a rising tide of female rappers carving out a niche in the digital streaming era. He also praises a pair of rappers who have wowed him with their lyrical prowess. “Kendrick Lamar,” says the rapper. Cordae. I believe that today’s rappers have an entrepreneurial attitude, and that they know even more than I did and are taking possibilities. They just have to strike a balance between the street and their long-term objectives.”

Meanwhile, Nas considers his inspirations to be the pinnacle of achievement. “All I want to do is become as wonderful as the people I grew up thinking were the best,” he says. The list goes on and on: Big Daddy Kane, Kool G Rap, LL Cool J, Slick Rick, Ice Cube, and so on. I just want to be able to look in the mirror and say, “I did what they did.”
