On a new version of “Peru,” Nigerian rapper Fireboy DML enlists Grammy-winning singer and songwriter Ed Sheeran for the ultimate collaboration. Originally published by YBNL Nation / EMPIRE in July.
As he travels from Johannesburg to Miami to San Francisco, Fireboy narrates the story of a woman who steals his heart and then continues to capture his attention around the world. “Pour up the bottle, I want to level up,” Sheeran sings over an Afrobeat backdrop. I can never get enough of you when I’m with you. I’m not in a hurry, so complain slowly.”
In a statement sent through his manager, the “Jealous” singer expresses his delight at their pairing.
“Knowing Ed Sheeran is a fan of my sound and having him hop on a song that was inspired by my travels around the world has been a dream come true.” This is a thrilling time not only for me, but also for Afrobeats.
I’m hoping this is the first of many collaborations with Ed and other musicians throughout the world, and I’m looking forward to everyone hearing this song during the holidays.”
“Peru” has received over 75 million listens to date, making it Nigeria’s second most streamed song. The new tune and video are released only a few weeks before Fireboy kicks his his first-ever Apollo U.S. tour in February.
