The trial of R. Kelly is set to begin in 2021. R. Kelly’s lawyers have asked the courts to dismiss claims that he knowingly exposed two people to herpes during jury selection.
According to court records obtained by TMZ, the singer’s legal team has stated that herpes does not fit the New York State Department of Health’s definition of a sexually transmitted infection.
Kelly’s lawyer, Thomas Farinella, argued, “To enable the government to proceed forward with those counts would be to allow an obvious mischaracterization and interpretation of the statute’s application, because the statute clearly does not encompass herpes.”
According to the Associated Press, 12 jurors and six alternates will be chosen. On Monday, hundreds of potential jurors showed up at the federal courthouse. On August 18, R. Kelly’s trial will begin.
